Drunken woman threw glass bottle at student's head

A woman was jailed for throwing a glass bottle of vodka at a student's head while drunk on a bus in Nottingham.

Amanda Ross, 39, targeted the 23-year-old victim, who boarded a bus in the city centre heading to Clifton with a friend on 14 February 2022, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The force said Ross sat next to the woman at the back of the bus and began flicking her drink at her, prompting the student and her friend to move to the top deck.

Ross, who was jailed for two years on Friday, followed the victim and later threw a bottle of vodka at her, causing a cut to the student's head that needed to be glued and left a scar, police added.

The force said Ross had asked the victim if she had a problem while she flicked her drink at her.

The student's friend tried to get between the victim and her aggressor before the bottle was thrown shortly before 20:15 GMT.

Ross, of Cinnabar Way in East Leake, Nottinghamshire, was arrested after a media appeal was issued and she handed herself in.

She went on to plead guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm without intent.

She was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court, where it was heard the victim had been in her final year of university studies when the attack happened, and that she was a keen footballer who also wanted to join the army.

Police said she was still suffering symptoms since the attack, including blurred vision and headaches.

According to the force, Judge Michael Auty KC told Ross she had "robbed" the victim of those two passions in her life due to her behaviour that day, adding he had "no doubt she would have had a terrific career in football and with the army".

The court heard Ross was "genuinely sorry" for what she had done and was "thoroughly ashamed" by the way she had behaved.
